Doddabetta is the highest mountain in the Nilgiri Mountains at 2,637 metres (8,652 feet). There is a reserved forest area around the peak. It is 9 km from Ooty, on the Ooty-Kotagiri Road in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a popular tourist attraction with road access to the summit. It is the fourth highest peak in South India next to Anamudi, Mannamalai and Meesapulimala. The peaks Hecuba (2375 m), Kattadadu (2418 m) and Kulkudi (2439 m) are the three closely linked summits in the west of the Doddabetta range near to Udagamandalam.
Tea Factory & Museum is situated on Doddabetta Road in Ooty. Amidst the blue hills of Nilgiris, it is one of the popular tea factories in Tamilnadu and among the must visit Ooty Tourist Places. The Ooty Tea Factory is spread across nearly an acre; all covered with the emerald green tea plants. Visitors can see the entire processing method right from the freshly plucked green leaves to its packaging at the factory. It also houses the Tea Museum where visitors can learn about the origin of different kinds of tea leaves that are used across the globe along with the history of tea in India and its evolution in the Nilgiris.
Spread over an area of 55 acres, the Government Botanical Gardens is undoubtedly one of the most sought after tourist attractions not just in Ooty but in the entire Tamil Nadu. No tourist will leave Ooty without a visit to the well organized, well maintained botanical gardens. It is Maintained by the Horticultural Department of Tamil Nadu, the present day Botanical Gardens is divided into 5 sections. Another main attraction in the Botanical Garden, Ooty is the Fossil Tree trunk which is twenty million years old and the Toda mund or the Toda hill. On any day you will find an innumerable number of families just chilling and enjoying the warm sun and children playing around in the gardens.
The Ooty Lake is the pride of the Blue Hills. It is the central and strategic attraction. Mr. John Sullivan formed this artificial lake in the year 1824, the then Collector of Coimbatore. The Ooty lake which extends to an area of 65 acres. Earlier the entire lake was used for fishing. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation on behalf of the Tourism Department took the possession of the lake for pleasure boating facilities in the year 1973. Another added attraction of the Ooty lake is the Mini Train and an amusement park.
Situated in the heart of Ooty town, this garden has been beautifully laid out in terraces with rose tunnels, pergolas and bowers with rose creepers. To commemorate the centenary Flower Show, the Rose Park was established at Vijayanagaram in Udhagamandalam covering an area of 4 hectares in five terraces. Today this garden has the largest collections of roses in the country like Hybrid Tea Roses, miniature rose, Floribunda, Ramblers, roses of unusual colours like black and green are some of the more than 3,000 varieties of roses that will captivate your senses. The Rose Garden is situated in slopes of the Elk Hill. The rose varieties planted in this park were assembled from different sources.
Just opposite the Ooty Lake lies the little Thread Garden of Ooty, full of beautiful artificial flowers. As you enter the dimly-lit space, brightly coloured flowers, plants and lawns will welcome you, and those are all woven to take the form that you see today. A garden of flowers which will never die, the leaves which won’t dry, and the plants which are bound to retain their vividness for long. The main activity at the Thread Garden in Ooty involves you getting blown by those unbelievable artefacts. Every flower, each stem and the entire greenery have been produced by hand weaving coloured embroidery threads with canvas and wire.
One of those 'must see' places in Ooty town, the place is thoroughly enjoyable and also informative for the kids, besides the place being very easily accessible. The Wax World contains beautiful statues of Indian freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale among many others. The museum also has wonderful replicas of social figures like Mother Teresa and our former President, Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. The Wax World also has many replicas depicting the typical Indian way of life, especially in the villages. The whole setting of a village and people doing pottery and farming and so on all made entirely of wax is a wonderful site.
The Pykara is the largest river in the District. It is considered very sacred by the Todas. The Pykara river rises at Mukurthi peak. It passes through hilly tract, generally keeping to North and turns to West after reaching the Plateau’s edge. It gets down majestically in a series of cascades; and the last two falls of 55 meters and 61 meters are known as Pykara falls. They are about 20 kms from Ooty. The Pykara Lake is about 21 kms from Ooty on the Ooty-Mysore road. Boating on the Pykara lake is enjoyable
Lush green grass that stretches endlessly and it doesn't seem to end no matter how much you walk. Finally when you find something different in the route it is in the form of another stretch of eucalyptus trees. Once renowned for the Udagamandalam Hunt, the Wenlock Downs is now home to the Gymkhana Club of Ooty and also the Government Sheep Farm. The 80 acres downs also accommodate the Hindustan Photo Films Company. All these do not take away even a little bit of the serenity and peace you get when you walk through the grass.
The train ride aboard the Nilgiri Mountain Railway makes your excursion to the coveted destination even more enticing. Hitch a ride on the train provides you a mesmerizing railway journey amidst the gentle valleys, dense forests, gurgling waterfalls and rolling hills. Britishers built this railway in 1908 seeking a respite from the scorching heat of the plains. The train still maintains its legacy with its blue and cream coaches, wooden benches and large windows. The only rack railway in India exemplifies the marvels of engineering involved in carving the railway line through the rugged mountainous terrain.
